Cycling is good for your health!

As Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Numerous studies have shown that cycling is a great way to boost your physical and mental health. Regular physical activity such as cycling can help protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis, and cycling with friends and club-mates creates a great social environment that is recognised as helping with mental health.  Cycling regularly is a great way to reduce the risk of serious health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Cycling is low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment too!

Cycling is;

  • Low impact – a good pedaling action means less strain on your joints compared to say running.
  • A decent workout – pedaling uses the major muscle groups to move you around.
  • Easy – riding a bike is one of the most efficient ways of using human power to get around.
  • Good for strength and stamina – cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness.
  • A great way to begin exercising – start at low intensity, especially if you're recovering from injury or illness, and gradually build up to a more demanding workout when you're ready.
  • A fun way to get fit – there's a sense of adventure about riding outdoors and enjoying the countryside.  Our rides often explore the roads less traveled and you'll take in places and views you probably wouldn't otherwise experience.  When you're enjoying your cycling you're more likely to continue exercising regularly.
  • A great way to get around - Cycling can replace sedentary time spent driving or using public transport with good healthy exercise.

If you're thinking of taking up cycling, as with any form of exercise, begin slowly and build gradually.  We recommend you check with your doctor beforehand.

Our club rides always include a cafe stop. You'll have earned your coffee and cake.
